Please be advised that this email contains sad and difficult information.

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the tragic loss of a member of our Gonzaga student community. Colton L. Marcantel, '24, a senior business administration major with a concentration in finance, passed away this afternoon, having succumbed to a gunshot wound suffered during a social gathering early Saturday morning. While the investigation is ongoing, preliminary witness statements indicate that this tragic incident was the result of an accident. We wish to offer our deepest condolences to Colton’s family, friends, and loved ones.

A longtime Texan survived by his mother and father, brother, aunt, and grandmother, Colton enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. He embraced laughter and friendship, and his friends and family remember him as one who lived boldly, loved deeply, and saw the best in everyone. Colton was regularly on the Dean’s and President’s Lists and active in the Investment Club and intramural activities. Colton’s family is proud that he is an organ and tissue donor.

A Prayer Service of Remembrance for Colton will be held Wednesday, October 19, at noon in University Chapel (3rd Floor, College Hall). Also, in celebration of Colton’s life, his family members will be available Thursday, Oct. 20, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at University Chapel (3rd Floor, College Hall). All members of the campus community are invited to both events.

Please keep Colton, his family, friends, and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

In this time of great loss, we are reminded of the significant support a community such as ours provides. Losing a fellow student and member of our community is very difficult. We encourage those who need additional support, or simply wish to connect with others, to reach out to one of the available resources included in this email, or other support options as appropriate.

Further, we recommend these strategies for coping in the immediate aftermath of trauma:

  • Prioritize getting enough hydration, nutrition, and rest. Try to maintain a healthy routine.
  • Try to limit your intake of news, and make sure to take part in relaxing activities.
  • Spend time with people you trust who are supportive. It's okay to take time for yourself but try not to isolate too much during this time.
  • Avoid use of alcohol and other substances while you are trying to cope.

For more helpful strategies, please read this information from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA): https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/disaster-distress-helpline/coping-tips.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
