Dear Students and Families,
Each year, as part of the budget-building process for the following academic year, we work to minimize tuition and fee increases while continuing to expand our programs, services, facilities, and cover inflationary expenses. Maintaining our position as a “best value” among regional and national institutions is a very high priority, even as we constantly pursue opportunities to achieve higher levels of academic excellence for our students.
I am writing today to share information about approved changes to tuition, selected fees, and room and board rates for the 2023-2024 academic year as well as information about how rates are set, and the resources and support available for you.
Rate changes for academic year 2023-24*
- Gonzaga’s full-time undergraduate tuition rate will increase by $1,370 per semester, or $2,740 for the academic year (a 5.5% increase from the 2022-23 academic year).
- Accident Insurance and Wellness Fee will increase by $25.
- Room rate increases will vary by residence hall, suite, or apartment type, ranging from $65 to $390 per semester (a 2.3% average increase).
- The platinum “all-access” dining plan will increase by $310 per semester (a 9.0% increase) and includes $500 in bulldog bucks. Other meal plans will offer 14 meals per week and various levels of bulldog bucks.
*Note: information related to other fees beyond those listed above may also be assessed prior to the start of the academic year, such as those tied to a particular course or a program.
How tuition, fees, and room and board costs are set
Informed by changes in the various costs to support the mission of the University and deliver on our educational commitment to our students, Gonzaga’s Board of Trustees reviews budget projections prepared by the administration for the upcoming year then discusses and approves new rates.
Drivers of our costs
The vast majority of our costs are inflationary in nature. Costs ranging from personnel (salaries and benefits for faculty and staff) to facilities (utilities, insurance, maintenance) typically experience increases year-to-year. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in the United States rose 6.5% for the twelve-month period ending December 2022. Within CPI certain categories rose at a much higher rate, with food increasing 10.4%. Gonzaga must absorb the impact of these inflationary dynamics, which place upward pressure on our costs each year.
